Glossary Of Terms Commonly Used In Dog Food


The following are common terms used when talking about dog food ingredients:

antioxidants– are "protectors of cells" in the body and help to keep them and the immune system strong and healthly. Life's Abundance dog food contains a variety of antioxidants including vitamins A,C,E, plus vegetables and fruits including Pomegranatean excellent antioxidant source.

 chicken meal– is chicken which has had most of the water removed from it, which makes it a more a nutrient rich, concentrated source of protein than plain chicken. Life's Abundance uses chicken meal, along with catfish meal exclusively in their dog food.

probiotics– are live, beneficial microorganisms found in some foods (such as yogurt) and supplements.These "friendly bacteria" keep the intestinal tract healthy and strong in both animals and humans.  Probiotics are essential to good health.

prebiotics– In simple terms, prebiotics are the "food" that feeds probiotics.Prebiotics are actually components of food that are not otherwise easily digested by humans and these food components essentially feed beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in your gut. 

direct fed microbials-is another term used for "probiotics"  Direct-fed microbials help support healthy immune and digestive systems. Life’s Abundance food, for example, contains the following direct fed microbials: Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus casei Fermentation Product, Dried Bifidobacterium thermophilum Fermentation Product, Dried Enterococcus faecium Fermentation Product. Life's Abundance Premium Health Food for dogs contains both prebiotics and probiotics.

animal by products-Theses are animal carcasses and parts of carcasses from slaughterhouses, animal shelters, zoos and veterinarians, and products of animal origin not intended for human consumption, including catering waste (any waste food from restaurants, catering facilities, , slaughterhouses and household kitchens). Life's Abundance DOES NOT use any form of animal by products in their dog food.

omega 3 fatty acids– these are fats commonly found in marine and plant oils. A necessity for both humans and pets, Among their many benefits, they help support healthy skin and a shiny coat in dogs. These are included in Life's Abundance food in the form of fish oil.

Gluten- is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat, corn and related grain species, including barley and rye. Corn and wheat gluten is most commonly used in dog foods as an inferior protein source. It is hard to digest and can lead to allergies.
Life's Abundance dog food does not contain glutens.

 AAFCO– The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds.

APHIS EU– Stands for Animal Plant Health Inspection Service. APHIS cetification allows the sale of a finished pet product to the International market, including the European market, which has extremely high standards on ingredient sources. Life's Abundance dog food is both AAFCO and APHIS EU certified.
